“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29)
Spoken by John the Baptist upon seeing Jesus.
Reflection
Every Sunday, I hear these words, and I try to truly concentrate on them. It is good to let the weight of that statement sink in: What is the setting for this? What is the deeper meaning?
I see the priest at the altar preparing the sacrifice, just as in ancient times, and I reflect on the profound significance of Jesus as the Lamb. It is the most precious gift—the New Covenant and the miracle of Transubstantiation in the Eucharist. Given by grace without us deserving it. It is a miraculous and singularly important event. Bishop Barron’s Sunday sermon offers a lovely analogy that explains the meaning behind this verse.
Bishop Barron’s Sermon
Bishop Barron explains that while the Creator is the only one who truly understands the brokenness of the human soul, true healing requires more than a diagnosis from heaven; it requires a Savior willing to descend into the “muck and mess” of our lives. By entering directly into the dysfunction of the human heart, Christ offers the ultimate sacrifice to fix us from the inside out. Watch the video to understand the reason.
